Ans. The poem  "On Killing a Tree" by Gieve Patel is a satire on man's efforts to kill a tree. Trees are essential for human civilization as it supplies the oxygen. But men, for temporary gain, does everything to kill a tree. Trees grow slowly consuming the earth's nutrients and absorbing light, air and water. So, not a single jab or hack and chop can kill a tree. Small twigs will grow into full size. It has to be uprooted. Then it has to go through the process of drying in the sun, twisting and withering. Then only a tree can be killed. The poet presents the killing of a tree in a ceremonial way to criticize man's' reckless killing of trees with the tone of irony.
